Competition Rules
PacWest adheres to the USA Taekwondo Competition Rules
Update for 2011 (dated 01/01/11):
We will be using the Daedo Protector & Scoring System (PSS), but only for the body. Head kicks as well as punches will continue to be scored by the three judges in each ring.
The biggest two changes from last year are the bonus point for a turning head kick (360 roundhouse, spin whip, or spin back) that has already been scored by the judges--4 points total, and a point gap of 12 at any point after the end of the second round. We will be using our current stock of 2-button wireless handsets, which means the center referee will have to stop the match to award the bonus technical point for any turning kicks, either to the head or the body.
Both feet out are out, as usual. You cannot score or be scored on once both your feet are out of the 8x8 area, where at least one of the two fighters will get a Kyung-go. And there is the same Kyung-go after 5+10 seconds of no action.
As for how hard you have to kick to the head to score, well remember because of the new video replay rules, even when video replay wasn't in use say at the Senior Nationals in Orlando last summer, any contact regardless of intensity to the head would be scored three points. Now WTF/USAT is back to where you must kick the head with *some* power before you get the 3 or 4 points. Doesn't have to be as hard as a scoring kick to the body, but there must be some impact. Just like say two years ago. So a light tap to the head won't get you any point.
No coach can protest about points to the body. It is the responsibility of the PacWest officer in charge of the meet to ensure
the PSS is working properly during the entire event. As for head kicks, please keep in mind that a coach's protest is a privilege, not a right, because we are not using the Instant Video Replay (IVR). If the center referee clearly sees that a head kick has not occurred, she is perfectly entitled, and correctly so, to not grant a coach's request to poll the judges.Equipment. Don't forget all your black belt fighters must wear a uniform with a black V-neck. Men must wear a groin protector inside their pants. Open-finger gloves are mandatory. One is not allowed to roll up the pants at the bottom without proper taping. And most importantly, everyone must wear the sensor socks from Daedo.
The rules regarding sportsmanship have tightened. If the coach stands up or leaves his seat during a match, his player will get at least a Kyung-go. If a player signals to the center ref at any point during the match that her equipment is loose and adjustment is needed, the request will be granted, but with a Kyung-go, with the understanding that a fighter should have proper equipment that does not need adjustment for a two-minute round.
